out of my comfort zone

out of my comfort zone

im going to pretend that ive been a faithful & dutiful blogger & that it hasnt been months since my last post...

ive been toying with getting back into design properly - you might remember years ago i designed stuff for other people - some food packaging, a book cover & some stationery before designing for moda. i enjoyed these experiences immensely - taking direction (however loosely) from someone else who has a proper job (ie an art director) was daunting, but equally rewarding when the final pieces were finished. so in order for me to stick my toes back in the water, i thought id better brush up on some skillz and take an online course. from monday i will be a student on the lilla rogers make art that sells (MATS) course and im bloody bricking it, not least because its an intensive 5 week course & the boys are off school for easter for 3 of those weeks. way to go with planning, lu, you idiot. its to push me out of my comfort zone & designing for all kinds of markets, from bolt fabric (well, yeah, ok, looking forward to that one) and childrens books (ekk!) the second part is in october and ive signed up for that too. oh, & im writing my second book. (which is why ive been awol - been starting to play around with ideas & researching. as well as procrastinating & eating cake.)

anyway, i will be blogging a bit more regularly if ive time, with images, if not lots of words. but thats OK because im pretty sure most of you would rather i shut up now & then anyway.

i leave you with a collage i made the day i signed up for MATS. i wont lie, i didnt exactly push myself out of my comfort zone here, but slowly, slowly, catchy monkey, yes?

The Glory of Easter allows Hope to Blossom

The Glory of Easter allows Hope to Blossom

Easter tablescaping in a red dining room can be tricky . . .

but my Blue Willow, which is at ease in any season, takes on the challenge.

making a graceful entrance,

to create a comfortable, understated,

family-friendly,

Easter breakfast.

(Guess you noticed I changed the vase holding the forsythia to my $1.50 thrifted bunny pitcher half-way through the pics. Thats what happens when one finds treasures in the off-season and nearly forgets them when the moment of their big reveal arrives.)

I liked the way the blue willow and Mr. Rabbit on the mantle were peeking through the forsythia. The yellow forsythia also corresponds to the yellow salad plate layer in the tablesetting. (Does one really use salad plates for breakfast? Yes, if it completes the tablescape, one does. Though Im sure you seasoned tablescapers know what to call the plate layer during the breakfast meal.)

Not to be outdone by the blue willow, the daffodils and the hyacinth stepped into the spotlight outside on Easter morning as well.

How to Build a Garden Shed Tools of the Trade

How to Build a Garden Shed Tools of the Trade

So you’ve decided to learn how to build shed... your wife must want her garage back. Anyhow it’s happened and your dreams of having your very own man-space is about to be realized. Little does she realize what she’s really allowed. Guys, can we say “shopping spree”!!! Wondering where to invest your hard earned dollar best to help you build a shed? Well wonder no more...

Besides the basics, there’s a few things you need to properly build a shed. I trust you’ve already gotten your plans and hopefully some trustworthy help and are now thinking TOOLS! One of the first things I invested in was the Dewalt 18v. contractors pack. This has so much at a great price, I couldn’t pass it up. It’ll definitely get you started with the hammer drill, impact wrench and circular saw.

You can always use chorded tools. While they definitely have more power and torque, you’re sacrificing portability and convenience (not to mention the fear of slicing through your power chords and giving yourself a new hair style). The grinder, reciprocating saw & flashlight will come in handy for other projects. This will definitely get you covered for your basic drills & portable saws.

A table saw is another extremely useful investment for a project this size. Even a portable job site table saw will work beautifully, just to keep the big cuts under control, especially when you’re doing plywood sheathing.

Most likely, you’ll want some pneumatic tools, so get yourself a good air compressor. A framing nailer hooked up to your air compressor will save you valuable time when the inevitable storm rolls in as well as your arm halfway through this project. And just think, you can pump up the tires on your lawn mower and wife’s car when necessary... bonus.

After the big things are acquired, round out your arsenal with a few trusty finishing touches. Pull out your favorite hammer and stash of nails to make sure you’re covered there. Get a good tape measurer & speed square that can handle being dropped a few times, framing square and chalk line, just for those big sheets of plywood. A hammer stapler will make quick work of tyvek or other similar products for weather proofing your project.

Now if you’re anything like me and my crew, no project can be completed without some good tunes. And if you’re using chord less tools, Dewalt makes a great radio that can charge 18, 14.4 and 12 v. batteries to keep everyone up and running smoothly.

If you really don’t think you’ll use the big tools after this project, I suppose you could rent them... but why? Especially when you’ll have a brand-spank-in new shed to put them in! Happy building, everyone!

And here are the rest of the new changes

At last, a river pebble path that doesnt need to be raked back in place every time it rains, like the bark path...I love it, the kitties dont.  (Gives pussyfooting a whole new meaning...)  It feels delightfully Zen-garden, to me...

And yes, at long last...

...you guessed it...

Window screens!  I can have the windows open in mosquito and fly season!  Notice the clever swiveling wooden prop...its attached at the bottom...

My knight did a fantastic job...

I used one of my terra cotta triskeles to hold the big screen in place, like a toggle...the small one is so tight friction alone holds it!

This one has a brass hinge to hold the window open...

And a delightful new addition to the sheds art gallery, a lamb by the oh-so-talented Wil Freeborn--thanks, Wil!  Check out his Etsy store, here: https://www.etsy.com/people/wilfreeborn and dont miss his wonderful new book!
The screens are absolutely perfect timing, this gloriously cool, delightful summer!  Loving the fresh air...

Box full of little chickies

Box full of little chickies

For all you chicken fans out there (and I know there are a few), here are some baby photos. From 20 eggs in the incubator, nine eventually hatched. Unfortunately the last two chicks to emerge from the shell had something wrong with their legs and feet and just as I was considering whether I should dispatch them or try to correct the problem, both died. Of the remaining eggs, one chick partly hatched but didnt make it out of the egg, four died early on in their development and six eggs were infertile. But Im happy with seven healthy chicks, now cheeping, scratching and pecking about in a box in the garage. They are super cute. Hopefully there will be a few hens among them, as our little flock is down to only a few hens plus Sebastian.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF A PHOTO SHOOT

BEHIND THE SCENES OF A PHOTO SHOOT

Remember that kitchen I posted about....

Well it is cruising along at a snails pace.  These kitchen cabinets are a process to install.

I am so excited that its going to be on a kitchen tour in late March!  The bad part is they had to come take a picture the other day for the brochure.

Uh huh....and the fact that we pulled that off is nothing short of a miracle.

I cant reveal too much but I wanted to show you a little behind the scenes.

Here is the setting when I arrived with a basket full of accessories and some branches of Quince.

This was at 1:30 and the photographer was arriving at 3:00!  Still installing shelves...and Lisa [the homeowner!] was wiping down the appliances.

The marble had been installed a few hours ago.

This Currey light fixture was laying on its side!

Here is a close up of the marble....and the sink

And.....about an hour or so later....

Simple restaurant supply white dishes the homeowner bought second hand!!!  I love them.
Good eye Lisa:)

Styled up!
If you look closely there are some things missing.....

And....if you turn to the right you will see this!

Hahahahaha....the light fixture is hanging on a hook.  It just goes to show what you can do with a little lipstick.....but of course we had a pretty nice pig to put it on!

OK....I have to get to work on my presentation for tomorrow.
Definitely running behind on this one.

Shermagician :)
