out of my comfort zone

out of my comfort zone

im going to pretend that ive been a faithful & dutiful blogger & that it hasnt been months since my last post...

ive been toying with getting back into design properly - you might remember years ago i designed stuff for other people - some food packaging, a book cover & some stationery before designing for moda. i enjoyed these experiences immensely - taking direction (however loosely) from someone else who has a proper job (ie an art director) was daunting, but equally rewarding when the final pieces were finished. so in order for me to stick my toes back in the water, i thought id better brush up on some skillz and take an online course. from monday i will be a student on the lilla rogers make art that sells (MATS) course and im bloody bricking it, not least because its an intensive 5 week course & the boys are off school for easter for 3 of those weeks. way to go with planning, lu, you idiot. its to push me out of my comfort zone & designing for all kinds of markets, from bolt fabric (well, yeah, ok, looking forward to that one) and childrens books (ekk!) the second part is in october and ive signed up for that too. oh, & im writing my second book. (which is why ive been awol - been starting to play around with ideas & researching. as well as procrastinating & eating cake.)

anyway, i will be blogging a bit more regularly if ive time, with images, if not lots of words. but thats OK because im pretty sure most of you would rather i shut up now & then anyway.

i leave you with a collage i made the day i signed up for MATS. i wont lie, i didnt exactly push myself out of my comfort zone here, but slowly, slowly, catchy monkey, yes?

MY LATEST OBSESSION

What would that be you ask?

 Metal countertops.

There are so many choices to make designing home so you try to think of different textures to keep things interesting.  For walls we turn to wood or wallpaper.

With countertops we normally go with granite, marble, quartz or wood.

BUT......I have been checking out alternatives and came across Bastille Metal Works.

Started by Christopher Lee Plummer and Katrina Plummer Bastille Metal Works is the leading producer of custom cast Zinc and Pewter countertops in the world.  They are located in Savannah and New York.

We are all familiar with RH tables covered in zinc but lets expand it a little....

Mantle

Countertop

Gorgeous metal ceiling

Medallion

Countertop

Table

These are all zinc examples but how about pewter?

Francois & Co [pewter]

Raw Urth Designs [pewter]

Good Lord.

What I learned about zinc is that it reacts to water, fingerprints, lemon juice and other things although eventually the marks blend together to leave the countertop with a beautiful dark blue gray patina.

You shouldnt cut on it and there might be warping  if you put hot pots on it.

High maintenance but so is marble.
[and me I might add]

Zinc is about half the cost of pewter.  Hence the reason I found most images of pewter used in  commercial spaces like restaurant bars.

Zinc hood....yes but only in my dreams probably:(

Hubba Hubba this ceiling is sick!

Zinc counters that are antiqued with Amy Howard Homes solution

There are zinc sheets [darn say that 5 times in a row] and cast zinc which I understand might be better [15 gauge that is at least .060 thick].  It usually cost between $150-$200 @ square ft.

Cha ching.

How many times can I use the word "zinc" in one post.

A NEW Way to Follow My Covered Bridge!

A NEW Way to Follow My Covered Bridge!

Have you heard that Google Friend Connect is going away for non-Blogger blogs?  Yup, as of March 1st, GFC will no longer connect you to blogs that you would like to follow on Wordpress or other non-Google platforms.  And even though I am a Blogger blog, I was not happy with this change - I follow all sorts of blogs and I like the convenience of seeing them on my dashboard.  I am also concerned that GFC will go away altogether (thats the rumor).  So when I heard about a NEW way to follow my blogs, I jumped at the chance.  Im trying to stay ahead of all of these changes.  And you can too.  Introducing:

This is a completely FREE service - with some great features.  Youll be able to follow your favorite blogs and if you have your own blog, your readers will be able to follow you too!  Linky Followers is brand new (Im just getting used to it myself) but it will be a perfect transition from the fading GFC.  You can  group blogs into different categories and even create a blogroll that includes blogs that dont use Linky Followers.  You dont have to miss a thing!  You can follow me through Linky Followers with my new widget on the top of my sidebar.   Just click the "Follow Me" option and it will walk you through the EASY process of signing up.  If you follow me, please leave a comment and Ill be sure to follow you back!  You can head over to Linky Followers to get your own widget - just let me know when its up and running!

BTW, if youre wondering about GFC followers automatically switching over to Linky Followers, they wont.  Its a completely different service.  So please take a moment to sign up.  I am really excited about this new option for my readers.  And Im excited to have a new tool for following my favorite blogs!

Dont forget - there are still other ways to keep updated on My Covered Bridge.  You can follow me on Facebook, Pinterest, or through email.  Check my sidebar for those options!

MY WEEK

MY WEEK

Another week has just flown by like it had the thrust of jet engines.

......and we all know there is no stopping time.

Tick....tick....tick....

I had a bit of a lull and got my Pansies planted which meant pull out one dead and wilted Impatiens and shove a Pansy in its place.  Easy peasy.  I also threw some mums in a pot by the door.

And fall decorating is done:)

Saw some great stuff at HomeGoods....

All of this together could have been a great room!

I regret that I did not buy these 2 mirrors....so gorgeous.

And these little beauties!

Picked up my phone..... so excited!

This sucker almost bit me.  Seriously.  Like my foot grazed it.  So now I am freaked out and cant go on the trail anymore.

I am still shuttering.  And to top things off....fall brings out spiders and webs.  Its the season of crazy movement and and slapping air as we walk through an unnoticed web.

Took a little stroll through Anthropologie.
Knob city.

Then I found myself in Zara [thanks to the encouragement of a friend] and bought this scarf!

I cruised down to  Lewis & Sheron Fabrics.

Might need to do a project with this killer Lacefield Designs fabric.  I just get all giddy when I see a great paisley. You?

Headed over to ADAC yesterday to start putting together a plan....
Was crushing on this trim.....

Are you bored yet?

Ran through Stark Carpet and got excited about this little lovely:)

Ate one of these in Kravet

Sourced this for host chairs at the end of a very wide....12 foot long dining table.

Also put together these cool chairs [Bernhardt Interiors] and coffee tables for a project!  That antique marble one is killing me.

Posted this in Instagram yesterday.....

These Steve Madden shoes are so comfy....like athletic shoes in disguise! I actually got mine at Nordstrom Rack.

And thats it.  Whew.

Hope yall have a productive weekend.....I will be working on my ORC project:)
