A while back I ran into Jane at a function in Franklin. "Oh," she says. "Youre the same size as me, can you wear my clothes in the fashion parade?"

The event she was talking about was yesterdays Vintage Retro Fashion Parade with High Tea held aboard the 1912 steam ferry Cartela, currently moored near the old Government Jetty in Franklin for her restoration. It was a fundraiser hosted by the Women on Water (WoW) to raise money for the St Ayles Skiff Regatta to be held in Franklin 12-15 February next year.

It was a great afternoon. A bunch of us ladies (and two blokes) aged from 13 to well... she would prefer not to say I guess... dressed up in an array of funky outfits from various eras, from the 20s to the 80s. Hair, make up, frocks, heels - so different from my standard daily attire! There were cute fifties frocks, sixties rayon numbers, wedding gowns and even some bathing suits, all matched with the appropriate hat, jewellery, gloves, parasols and handbags. My favourite outfit was a funky red pantsuit with slightly flared sleeves and legs and a colourful turban hat - it sure got some shrieks from the guests! I am not much of a fashion sort, but boy it was a fun day, getting to wear real vintage clothing.

The WoW ladies did an amazing job of setting the upper deck of the old ferry for high tea, with beautiful crockery, tablecloths, flowers and cake stands piled with savoury and sweet delights. The fashion parade showed off some of the beautiful items in Southerly Dollings Shop@Franklin. If you are passing by, pop in - there are some wonderful finds in there.

So I went to a movie on Sunday.  Which is a big deal cause I have not been to one for about a year.

I saw Birdman.  It is not the movie to see if you are afraid of heights.  Like every scene was someone sitting on a ledge or about to jump off a ledge.  I spent the whole time looking everywhere but the screen.  

Dont get me wrong it was a good movie but even more the acting was ridiculous.  I can see why it is up for all of the awards....but it gave me angst.

Movies are not cheap anymore.  About 25.00 [movie and popcorn].  That is one reason my husband wont go with me.  I want my own bag and I dont share.  He doesnt understand that because it is more economical to get one large tub.

Nope.  His hands are like shovels and it becomes a race.  I cant take the pressure but more than that I find myself concentrating on getting my hand in the bucket than watching the movie.

So this is going to be my first fashion post.  No worries....this is still a design blog and always will be.  Its just that it took me a long time to define my style and quit buying things that hung in my closet so I thought I would share my wisdom with you.

Lets start with these....

J Brand Maria Photo Ready black jeans.  Hands down the best ever.  Yes...they are expensive but I wear them practically every day! [I have 2 pair].  They fit like a glove and do not fade.

I pretty much only wear these and regular jeans so that saves me a lot of money right there.

A white shirt is a staple for me....I have about a 100.  Nah.... but one whole section in my closet is all white.

I love Banana Republic no iron fitted shirts but they run small so I go up a size.

 

A pair of black ballet shoes.

I have these Cole Hann flats and they are so comfy.  I got them on sale and might buy another pair.

I am strictly a small cross body black purse kind of gal.  I like hands free.

I like this one from BR.  I never got into the large purse trend.

When I travel or need more space I use a bag like this also from BR.

I keep it basic.....

I love boots in the winter and I have both of these from Fry.  The tall ones are 5 years old and at the end of each season I take them to be shined up so they are ready for the next year!  Yes...they are pricy but I always wait for a 20% off sale.  Plus they will last.

I shop a lot at BR, J Crew and Madewell.  Here are a few great looks....

Surprise....all neutrals.

I recently purchased this scarf and shirt from BR.  You can always catch a "40% of everything in the store" sale....which I did!

The denim work shirt.....I might have about 10 of them....if my husband is reading....which he never does but you can bet [with my luck] somehow he will stumble across this post....I only have 2.

Goes great with white and black jeans.

Again more neutrals.  

I am sure it looks a bit boring to most of you but it saves me from standing in my closet....with that deer in the headlights kind of look.

It is a little like how I approach design....neutrals but then I can add some color and pattern with pillows.

Who knew.

Just to keep the design ball rolling .....this chair that I saw on Classic Casual Home slayed me.

Before we get to the meat of this post can we talk about husbands for a minute?  Specifically husbands and driving.

Yeah.....Im gonna go there.  WTH.  Its like when I turn around and look at him in the drivers seat he is wearing a helmet and a number on his shirt.  I feel like I should be sitting in a cage for protection.  I am always saying...... when he decides to get to the "front" of the line of every car within a 10 mile radius.....OK....I bet you taught that guy a lesson.  He is probably going to turn his life around and be a better driver now.  

You can bet on that.

OK....just needed to vent for a minute.

My nephew is getting married in July and I have been stressing about what to wear.  

I want to be comfortable.

Here is where I started....

This dress from Nordstroms

I really liked it but I started thinking I might need a lot of undergarments [think spanks] to pull it off.

Spanks=not comfortable.

Same with this little number by DVF at Nordstroms.

Then I came up with the crazy idea that I could pull off some pretty black pants and a nice top.  That way I could wear them separately again.

The girl helping me brought me these St John palazzo pants. They were on major sale.

But....they were a size 6 and I really need an 8. Think spanks again.  Plus...I just felt like they were too dressy.  More "black tie".

This Parker top was really pretty with them and it had a fun back.

So.....I made one more cruise through the racks.

I found these.  On sale!

 Linen...perfect size and oh so comfortable.

And this Rebecca Taylor Die Cut Lace top. [Looks like it is no longer on the web site].

Now before you get all crazy and say "WHAT....a crop top?".  Have you lost your mind?  Do you know how old you are......

The pants have a really high waist so there is no skin showing.  Swear.

Jewelry....I will probably wear my hair back in a low pony so then I can wear some dangly earrings.  Love these from Stella and Dot.

So dang comfortable with a cute little heel.

 I could also wear a necklace and no bracelets.....

 Im set now.  The good thing is that everything is interchangeable....and can be worn again.
