Ombre Penny Art

Heres a fun little project that I did over the weekend - Ombre Penny Art.

I love copper so this project was right up my alley. I started with a frame from Michaels (on clearance) for $4.99 and a bunch of pennies -

I lined up all of the pennies from bright and shiny to dull and weathered -

I wanted a very random look so I left them heads up or tails up, facing any direction. All willy nilly. Which is a big deal for me because I usually have to make everything straight and neat. I just knew that this project would look better if I veered away from my usual habits. :-)

I took the frame apart, and dry-fit the pennies to the backing -

Then , I super glued the pennies in place. I started with the four corners - just so everything would come out straight. I also used a ruler to keep things in line. And that was it! Now, its hung in my kitchen and I think it looks great!

And since I work from my kitchen table, I get to look at it all of the time! Yay!

Heres the cost breakdown -

$4.99 frame

$1.08 pennies

$6.07 Total

Anyone else work on an art project over the weekend? Or use the phrase "willy nilly"? Or spend an hour and a half ironing that huge pile of clothes in your room that youve been ignoring? Just me?...

ART

If you are like me one of the last things to go in a room is art and accessories. I like to see the direction a finished room is going and then figure out where I need a big ole "smack in the face" kind of piece!

One of my go to places for art here in Atlanta is Gregg Irby Gallery.

Gregg has been a fixture on the art scene in Atlanta for years and all it takes is one visit to her new studio and you can see why!

I was over on the Westside and popped in to check it out. First of all its about 10 times bigger which is a good thing!

So many beautiful pieces to choose from.

If you think you cant afford original art then you are wrong. There are price points for everyone and all kinds of sizes.

Design today is kind of a "anything goes"....with most rules tossed out the window. I agree a "too perfect" room can be predictable and boring on the other hand....easy there people.....it can become a hot mess pretty quick:)

What I am trying to say is that your art does not have to match you decor perfectly. It can be that one thing in the room that draws the eye in. Whether its a large canvas over the mantel or sofa it can also be a few smaller pieces in a great gallery wall.

This is a canvas I bought years ago.....can you imagine this room without all that glorious color above the mantel? Boring.
