Shed Building Plans

Shed Building Plans - 7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Build Your Shed

1) What is the shed going to be used for?

At the start, you may be thinking its going to be used just to store the lawn and garden equipment. Think twice about this. Is it going to end up being a catch-all family shed? Are the kids going to want to store their sports equipment and toys in there?

Or will the wife decide to find a new place for the Christmas decorations and who knows what else, in your shed? Look ahead at what the shed will be used for and you may increase the square footage or the wall height to accommodate more storage space.

2)What size do you want it to be?

Now you know exactly what it is going to be used for, that will give you the size that you are going to want.
Remember to plan for the future. If its primarily for lawn and garden outdoor items, you will probably be adding to your arsenal over the years, so you don’t want to have to build a second shed all over again.

3)Where are you going to build it?

You want to determine where on your property is the best place to construct your building. It has to be some place accessible, preferably in a spot where it wont stick out like a sore thumb.

Probably tucked away so it doesn’t interfere with the usual activity on your property.  Plan for the future, you don’t want to have to move it. If you think you might want to move it someday, build it high enough off the ground so a forklift can get a bite on it.

Is the area you have chosen and the size of the shed you want compatible? If not then there has to be a compromise, either in the floor plan or the height.

4)Does it need to be insulated, waterproof, or open?

This will depend on your climate and also your intended use of your new shed.
I would highly recommend going with a metal roof no matter where you live. Metal roofing sheets outlast shingles and come in many different colors.

5) Do you need a building permit?

You better check with city hall for the local building codes. You know they are busy making up new rules for us even when it comes to our own property.

Better safe than sorry. Many places do not require a building permit for storage sheds of a certain size.

6)What is your budget for this project?

Everything you have planned up to now hinges on your budget. Its kinds of difficult to set a budget when you haven’t determined the cost of materials yet. You will have to decide on shed building plans and whether you are going to match the siding and roofing on your home then estimate the material cost. If you build it yourself, you are going to save big bucks on labor!

7)Where should you get your plans for building a shed?

You have lots of answers now. The type of shed, the size, the budget, and now to answer the final question. For this you will need to check out what resources are available to you.
